ΤΟ ΠΡΩΤΟ ΜΟΥ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΟ ΑΘΛΗΜΑ (MY FIRST OLYMPIC EVENT)

Termite.

Yesterday evening I had the opportunity to watch the 63 Kg of Womens Weightlifting, live from the weightlifting stadium in Nikaia. The Greek athlete Natasha Tsakiri was competing in this category as well.

The stadium is astonishing. From an architectural point of view it is magnificent, and is situated beside the Katrakeio Theatre in the northern part of Nikaia. The volunteers win the impressions from the very first moment, being so kind. They invite us in the stadium and lead us to our seats for the match to begin. The scoreboard is showing past olympic moments in weightlifting.

The match begun and it was among the best moments when we saw Natasha in her third attempt. She managed to lift 97,5 Kg and a standing ovation was well deserved. Overall however, she didn't do well as she didn't managed to get to the final rankings.

We left the stadium stunned by the organisation of the event, having watched for the first time in my life, athletes attempting to lift 3 times their own weight or sometimes more!!!

The Olympic Atmosphere

Today it has been my first night out in Athens. We went to Thissio for a drink. The reason I'm writing this post is to describe the joyful atmosphere of the city which is celebrating and so are we.

Outside the train station there was a concert of traditional Greek music taking place, starring Mariόh with her band. Just after the concert and outside the ancient market of Attalos, there were magicians doing tricks and actors doing stand up comedy with their audience. About 5 minutes from the train station and on the road to Gazi, there was a mini-theatre set up and a show was on. To top that, there were 50 volunteers wearing the characteristic t-shirts of Athens 2004 ready to help anyone who needed something.

The most important thing though was the people. Everyone was happy, everyone is living the olympic moments. The Olympic atmosphere and the spirit of the Olympic Games is here in Athens and the Athenians are making a huge deal out of this. Well done Athens! Well done Greece.

We are also extremenly proud of the 3 medals we have collected so far. Judo (Tuesday, 81 Kg GOLD), Diving (Monday, 3 m GOLD), Weightlifting (Monday, 63 Kg, BRONZE). Congratulations guys!

Regards,

Termite

P.S. : Tommorow it is time for me to attend an olympic event. Details will be posted by Thursday morning, before I leave for my second vacation period!!!Take care...

OLYMPIC GAMES, WELCOME HOME

After a splendid opening ceremony (which I'm sure most of the readers of this article watched on TV or live) the Olympic Games have at last returned to the country that they were born. The feelings? Pride, of course, as well as a great relief that everything is ready and the Games will be known as the best that have been organised so far. The Olympic Commitees believe this, the Greeks everywere on earth believe this, there is no way it will go wrong.

The most important part was that everyone here in Athens (which is where this post is published from) has began to realize the actual size of this effort and now every single citizen has complied with the rules set in July 2004. The Athenians and all other Greeks that are in Athens at this time of the year, want to prove why our tribe is well known for its hospitality and why Greece has given their wisdom to the rest of the world and formed it, in way, for us to live today.

I am positive that not everybody will agree with what I just said. However, what the people have presented in the opening ceremony has proved the significance of the Greek culture among the other ones. It is true, that we have still preserved our music, and the bouzouki (the musical instrument used in the ceremony) is among the most well known here in Greece. It is true that we have created the Olympic Games and they returned home after so many years. It is true that we have provided the world with the basics in maths, physics, chemistry, astronomy, philosophy. It is true that we are well known for our hospitality and the fact that the president of the Athens2004 (Mrs Yanna Aggelopoulou Daskalaki) talked first in English and French for the visitors and then in Greek for the locals is one of the smallest but yet so huge example of this. However, above all, it is true that the Olympic spirit has never abandoned Greece and is inhabitats.

WE WELCOME YOU ALL IN ATHENS now. If you want to experience all the above please come, we are very happy to have you in Athens.

Many thanks,

Termite
